UGA Graduate Dean's Award for International Study

Current Application Cycle – Accepted on a rolling basis until April 30 at 5:00pm.  Final awards be made by May 4 5:00 PM (EST). Selected students will be required to submit final reimbursement paperwork by  May 11th 

This award is generously funded by the Graduate School under the direction of Dean Suzanne Barbour. Awards are made by the Office of International Education (OIE). All questions should be directed to OIE - 706-542-2900.

The Purpose of this award: To provide travel reimbursement for UGA graduate students to participate in UGA-approved academic activities overseas. 

Amount of award: Given the availability of funds, the award is intended to assist with the cost of the round-trip international airfare in economy/coach from U.S. to the destination of the program/experience.  The award amount may not exceed the cost of the airfare, however, due to funding limitations, the award amount might only cover a portion of the international airfare and rarely exceeds $1000.  

Payment: From the Graduate School, in the form of a travel reimbursement, to be paid directly to the student via their UGA student account.

  • Student applicant must be enrolled in a UGA Graduate degree and plan to participate in a UGA-approved academic activity overseas in the Maymester or summer terms. 
  • Examples of eligible activities include UGA faculty-led study abroad programs, approved Non-UGA study abroad programs and independent activities abroad such as research or an internship for academic credit.
  • Competitive – judged on the basis of academic merit of the appropriateness and rigor of the proposed activity in relation to the applicant’s academic and career goals
  • Selection by the Education Abroad scholarship committee
  • Student must be in good academic standing and making satisfactory academic progress in a degree-seeking program as documented by the graduate coordinator.
•Not open to transient or non-degree students, nor to students in the following professional programs: JD, LLM, MBA, MAcc, PharmD, DVM
•Not to be used on behalf of Teaching Assistants working for the study abroad program itself
•Not open to students with current incompletes


  • Statement of purpose (one-page maximum): What are your objectives in studying/researching/interning abroad and in choosing this course and location?
  • Complete a questionnaire with the contact information of the student’s department business manager
  • Submit a copy of your airfare receipt (screen shots are acceptable)
  • If selected for award, the student will be required to complete an International Travel Authority, provide a receipt of their plane ticket purchase and complete a Travel Registry in the GoAbroad Portal in order to receive travel reimbursement

Upon return
  • Submit three photos from your time abroad
  • Speak publicly to the university community and to selected external audiences about your experiences and knowledge gained during the study abroad. Students who are graduating will be able to submit a one page paper reflecting on how the program made a difference in their graduate education in lieu of fulfilling the speaking requirement.
