UGA - Franklin - Morocco Summer:
Islam, Islamic Culture, Arabic, and Intercultural Dialogue

The overall aim of the course is to introduce students to an in-depth and first-hand understanding of Islam and Islamic culture in Morocco, in particular to Sufism (which is currently undergoing a revival in Morocco), Moroccan Islamic music, and Moroccan architectural art. Students will become acquainted with the socio-religious and socio-political issues that are shaping both the Islamic world and Morocco. Other objectives are to provide students with a beginning level facility in the speaking and comprehension of Moroccan dialectical Arabic, to give them a formal opportunity for intercultural dialogue with Moroccan students, and to introduce students to the concept of emotional intelligence in order to facilitate cultural adjustment to life in Morocco.

Program Location

students_hasanIIMarrakech, Morocco and travel throughout Morocco. In addition, through travel students will gain first-hand experience with both urban and rural geography: we will visit three major cities and a variety of villages off the beaten path as well as Moroccan mountains, valleys, plains, deserts, forests, rivers, waterfalls, and oases.

Academic Program

Morocco: Islam, Islamic Culture, Arabic, & Intercultural Dialogue
June 16 - July 7, 2018

Required Course Offerings:
ARAB 4000--Moroccan Dialectical Arabic--3 credit hours (no prereqs)
RELI 4310--Islam and Islamic Culture in Morocco-- 4 credit hours (no prereqs)



Approximately half of the trip will involve traditional classroom activities in Marrakech. The remainder of the program will
involve both day trips and two multi-day trips throughout Morocco. Among the various trips are the following:
  • Guided historical tour of the "old city" of Marrakech and its monuments;
  • Day trip to Tinmal, a fortified medieval mosque and center for the Almohad dynasty.
  • Concert of Moroccan Gnaoua music; Private Inshad performance by Ustad Bennis and ensemble; sometimes Sufi dhikr performances, and
  • Tour of the architectural monuments and traditional crafts of the "old city" of Fes.

To get a sense of the schedule of the program, see the Itinerary for 2001 and the Itinerary for 2004. Note that in addition to starting and ending on different dates, the itinerary for 2018 will be different in some ways from previous trips.

Housing

Students stay with Moroccan families when we are in Marrakech. 

Program Costs

  • $3500 program fee (tentative, paid as a $300 non-refundable deposit/ application fee, payable to *University of Georgia* by credit card when committing to the program; and a $3200 balance, for which UGA will bill you once you register for Summer classes at the end of March or the beginning of April). Note that this program fee does not include airfare, tuition or some meals. (Breakfast and lunch Monday-Friday and some group meals are included in the program fee.)
  • Roundtrip airfare to Marrakech was $1554 on Sept 22, 2017.  You must follow the instructions that Dr. Godlas will send you via email during the weekend after you have committed (or the weekend after you have been accepted if you apply after Feb. 15).

Payment Deadlines

  1. The deadline for the $300 non-refundable deposit for the UGA Summer in Morocco program is February 15th, 2018. It is to be paid online via credit card in the GoAbroad Portal when you commit to the program,  Failure to pay the program deposit by Feb. 15 or within 2 weeks of acceptance (whichever is later) will result in the student being dropped from the program. Applications can be submitted after this date, however, until the program is full.
  2. The deadline for the balance of $3200 for the Summer in Morocco program fee is April 29, 2018.

  3. The tuition for the Summer in Morocco Program (plus UGA student fees, which may vary) should be paid as soon as one can register for Summer  classes or shortly thereafter. At the latest, the tuition for the Summer  must be paid by May 18, 2018. Failure to pay this tuition by this date will result in students being dropped for non-Payment and sent back to the United States. 

  4. Optional Arabic Intensive:      
    a)  $100 application fee for the optional Arabic intensive is due with application for the Intensive no later than March 1. This is refunded after your full Optional Arabic intensive tuition is received. 
    b) The deadline for payment of the tuition for the Optional Arabic Intensive is March 8: total of $1400 either for ARAB 2003-2004 or ARAB 3005-3006; or total of $1600 for ARAB 1001-1002. This is to be paid by bank transfer per the instructions on the Arabic Intensive application. After your payment of the $100 application fee, Dr. Godlas will give you the information that will be necessary for the bank transfer.
