Ghana Service Learning

UGA- FACS- Ghana Service-Learning

The Ghana Summer Service-Learning is designed as a practicum encompassing observations, hands-on practice and lectures in nutrition/dietetics and health issues in Ghana. This program focuses on immersing students into a different culture and environment through educational travel, nutrition and health screenings and education, hospital observations, book discussions, active participation, lectures, field trips to cultural events and community dwelling in Ghana. Community-based nutrition and health screenings are used to provide service to communities and to improve student understanding of the health seeking behaviors, while the hospital observations provide insight to the health delivery system in resource poor countries like Ghana. These nutrition and health issues will be studied through the prism of resource limited and/or countries with emerging economies which have a much challenged healthcare system.

Program Location

Ghana Service Learning

Ghana provides the perfect backdrop for this type of learning environment. Ghana boast of some of the most diverse and remarkable natural and cultural resources and practices in sub-Saharan Africa including national parks, coastal areas, rainforest, traditional festivals and unique indigenous cultures and history. Pre-departure assignments and orientations, and in-country orientation and reflective essays are required (refer to the Course Requirements section in this syllabus as well as the itinerary for details). The course meets requirements for UGA experiential learning and can be used for electives depending on student major.

The Ghana Summer Service-Learning experience will provide students the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the perceptions diverse cultures have about food and nutrition, and their health. Students will also have the experience of observing and working with malnourished children and their mothers at a nutrition rehabilitation clinic. Students will also observe and conduct counseling sessions for different disease conditions under the direction of a registered dietitian. This Service-Learning will use the individual talents of each student and apply them to specific activity or project within selected communities in the Eastern Region, Greater Accra Region, Central Region and Western Region of Ghana.

Students are housed in community housing with a host family during our community and hospital work. We only stay in motels during excursions and other touristy activities. The Program provides breakfast and dinner as group meals covered under the program fee. Students are responsible for their lunches which is not covered under the program fee.

Program Costs

$3,600, which includes housing in the community and hotels, breakfast and dinner each day provided through the program (except for weekend off), field trips, admission fees to selected cultural and tourist events, facility user fees, honorarium to guest speakers and in-country program staff, medical and general supplies for community nutrition and health screening, and ground transportation. (The program fee does NOT include visa fee, airfare, tuition, or fees associated with tuition.)

I went into this trip being prepared for the worst living arrangements I could think of due to not knowing what to expect and wow was I shocked when we first arrived. The home that we stayed in is beautiful and we were treated like family during our entire stay. My expectations were far exceeded and I would go back in a heartbeat if I could.

Ms. Margaret became our adoptive mother throughout the trip. She made sure that we were safe, happy and well cared for ever day of the week. She did all of our laundry, cooked all of our meals, and cleaned up the messes we made. I really do not know how this trip would have transpired without her and her willingness to house us at the family home. I am so thankful for the support she provided and the roof she put over our head.

This program allowed me to grow and develop in both a professional and educational setting. It exposed me to culture, tradition, and history which influenced my perspective on both developing countries and the western world which I am accustomed to. It solidified my interest in my career field and also allowed me to explore more of the world! It broke down my predisposed perspectives on developing countries and showed me that they're actually very similar to developed nations.
