Study abroad in Freiburg, Germany, in summer 2022

UGA- Franklin- Freiburg Study Abroad
The Freiburg Study Abroad program is designed for students who want to learn German language skills and study German culture while having a transformative experience abroad.
While intensive study immerses students in German language, the program also offers a German culture course (GRMN 3550). This course is taught in English and focuses on the sustainable energy practices used in and around Freiburg and exposes students to new and progressive ideas in environmentalism and renewable resources.
Program Location

Freiburg im Breisgau, a city of 230,000, is located in southwestern Germany in the Black Forest and near the French and Swiss borders. This area of Germany is known for its wonderful climate, distinctive medieval architecture, lively cultural scene, and thriving university. Freiburg manages to combine the aesthetics of a flourishing medieval city with those of a modern, cosmopolitan university town. Freiburg is also a designated Green City, featuring sustainable urban design, nearby sustainable living communities, an extensive public transportation system and a focus on accommodating bicyclists and pedestrians over automobiles.
The Goethe Institute in Freiburg has offered German language courses for foreign students for 40 years. Students will take their language courses (GRMN 1001, 1002, 2001, 2002, 3010 or 4001) at this language institute in a 4-week intensive program.
Freiburg’s environmental approach to growth and extensive use of renewable sources of energy make it a unique cultural destination. Freiburg is known as an “eco-city,” and the nearby communities of Vauban and Rieselfeld were built with sustainability in mind.
