What were the most significant take-aways from your experience?

I realized how much more we can do as a country to promote sustainability and help the environment. I also learned that every little bit we do to be eco-friendly does make a difference. I learned to take advantage of every single opportunity and make the most out of everything in life. If you can have a good attitude, you will always have a better experience and you will be able to make the most out of every opportunity.

This was an experience that brought me out of my comfort zone in many differnet ways. The curriculum encouraged me to go beyond what I see regarding sustainability by looking at a bigger, world wide picture.

Don't be afraid to challenge yourself and explore opportunities that you wouldn't normally get.

What are your words of advice to students considering this program?
|
I would encourage students to go out of their way to become friends with every single person in their cohort, which includes professors. I would also encourage students to try to talk to field guides as much as possible. You can learn so much from these people, and they are what really makes your trip special. Also, students should make the most of every opportunity and go out of their comfort zone! When you do that, that's when you experience the most growth as a student and person.

I would advise everyone to sign up for this study abroad. It is an experience of a lifetime and you learn so much from it.

Definitely opened up my eyes to what it means to be a global citizen. I will forever carry with me cultural values that I learned throughout this experience.

It really opened me up to considering many other career paths. I really started to care about sustainability more than I ever have before, and that is something I will consider when thinking about my career path, especially concerned with the ocean. As far as my personal goals, I know I want to travel more, and I would like to make it back to New Zealand. I also know now that I want to live life with the adventurous attitude I had throughout my entire trip.

This experience impacted my personal goals. I plan to acknowledge and lower my carbon footprint, and things such as plastic and water usage.

I'm debating adding a sustainability certificate because I enjoyed the lectures so much. One of the projects I did I'm planning on working on as a personal passion project, and I'm considering adding environmental groups like NOAA to my list of future employer options.
