What were the most significant take-aways from your experience?

Being independent isn't just about being able to take care of yourself, but being comfortable in doing things alone. Living in a foreign country, communicating with strangers, and getting myself across the city by myself forced me to become even more independent and confident in myself and being alone.

What were the most significant take-aways from your experience?
|
The most significant take-away for me was actually being able to experience a new culture. The six and a half weeks in London was a short but long enough time to see and learn many things about the city and people there. Everything was similar yet so different from the US such as food, clothing, mannerisms, work life, etc. From learning how to use the Tube station to enjoying theatre productions, I was able to be a part of a whole new culture for over a month and it was fantastic!

This experience taught me that I can handle a lot more than I thought I could. It pushed me to be independent and try a lot of new things. I chose a program going to a place I had never been with a bunch of people I didn't know and that was really scary at first but this became one of the greatest experiences I have ever had. I fell in love with this new place and have now made so many new friends. I was pushed to try so many new things and really think I have grown because of it. Traveling, especially back to London, is definitely in my future.

What are your words of advice to students considering this program?

If you are unhappy with your internship placement, think about whether it's the actual job or your attitude. If it's the job, consider whether it's only aspects of the job or everything as a whole. If you're still unhappy with it, ask for a placement change. You can't expect others to help if you don't tell them what's wrong.

DO IT!! That's the first thing. I almost applied my sophomore year but got too scared and backed out. Then the next year I went back to the information session and told myself I had to do this. Everyone says how incredible studying abroad is! So I made myself sign up despite all the "What ifs..." floating through my head. My best piece of advice for this program is to not let the newness and unknown of such a large city scare you, but to embrace that and let yourself learn so much.

The experience definitely made me a more confident person who is able to step out of my comfort zone to achieve what I want. I have learned how to become an independent person who can live without the help of my parents in a foreign country and that I am indeed ready to be a part of the real "adult" world. It has taught me patience and how to deal with unexpected situations when it comes to people and work life. Hopefully, this experience will open up many more opportunities for me in the future!
