Ghana Service-Learning Program

The Ghana summer service learning program, led by Dr. Alex Anderson, is designed as a practicum encompassing hospital observations, hands-on practice with health and nutrition screenings in the community and lectures in nutrition/dietetics and public health issues in Ghana.

Travel Journalism in Copenhagen

Travel journalism has three distinct qualities: emphasis on cultural awareness; ambition to provide depth or insight beyond the surface; and complexity of theme, material, and structure within a specific place and with a specific people. While being immersed in Denmark, we will explore a range of techniques that travel journalists use to discover and verify information, to tell stories, and to engage audiences.

The Ireland Study Abroad Program is a 4-week program based in Galway, Ireland with classes conducted on the campus of the National University of Ireland-Galway. Offered by the School of Public and International Affairs, the program also includes visits to Belfast, Derry, Dublin, and many other exciting locations around Ireland and Northern Ireland. The classes in this program focus on the historical and current human rights issues facing Ireland, Northern Ireland, and the European Union.

Natural Resource Management in the Amazon

The conservation of tropical forests is a key sustainability challenge of the 21st Century and it requires knowledge of forest ecology and the social factors that influence conservation success. This program will teach students necessary natural and social science fundamentals, and how to effectively integrate them to respond to conservation challenges.

Human health and environmental sustainability are inextricably interwoven with each other, and also with the cultural practices and understandings in which they are embedded. The ways in which we communicate about health — from public health campaigns about driver safety or second-hand smoke to climate change actions or indigenous medicinal plants — likewise interact with culture and environment.
