Zurich International Travel Insurance
The University System of Georgia (USG) has entered into an agreement with Zurich to provide a robust and encompassing primary insurance international travel medical plan for all USG students, faculty and staff members studying away. On Call International is the 24/7 assistance company that you will call while you are abroad if you need medical or security assistance. This Zurich/On Call program is administered by Gallagher—USG’s new international travel insurance broker. All travelers participating in UGA-sponsored study away programs are required to be enrolled in the Zurich international health and travel insurance. This policy will also cover UGA employees traveling for business purposes.
All students, faculty and staff participating in UGA Global Education programs will be enrolled in batch for their program dates by the Office of Global Engagement. Students should not enroll themselves for the official program dates. Zurich Insurance for Faculty/Staff
All UGA faculty and staff members traveling abroad on official university business must be covered by medical evacuation and repatriation of remains insurance. However, most employees are already covered for this insurance as described in the section, "Base Insurance for Benefits-Eligible Employees".
Zurich Insurance for Faculty/Staff on a StudyAway Program
Zurich coverage through the study away policy is required for faculty and staff traveling with UGA students on a program approved by UGA. Faculty and staff will be enrolled into the coverage by OGE for the official dates of their program no later than one month prior to program departure. Per the Accompanying Individuals Policy, Zurich coverage is also required for dependents of UGA faculty and staff traveling on UGA StudyAway programs. Zurich coverage through the study away policy is available to UGA faculty and staff only when they are traveling with students on approved study away programs and activities.Dependents accompanying program staff on UGA StudyAway program may have coverage under the same policy and at the same rate for the duration of the program, or partial days within the program’s dates.
Base Insurance for Benefits-Eligible Employees
All UGA faculty and staff members traveling abroad on official university business must be covered by medical evacuation and repatriation of remains insurance. However, most employees are already covered for this insurance as described below:Benefits-eligible employees are automatically enrolled in $25,000 basic life insurance administered through MetLife, which includes Travel Services. Travel Services are available to benefits-eligible employees as well as their spouses and dependent children. Information about the Travel Services provided through MetLife can be found at USG's Travel Assistance Summary.More information about UGA Human Resources Benefits can be found on the UGA HR website.
Trip Cancellation
The University of Georgia and the Office of Global Engagement (OGE) recognize that unforeseen circumstances sometimes require trip cancellation. Neither the University nor OGE, however, can offer refunds or fee forgiveness outside of the StudyAway Program Withdrawal Policy.
All students participating in UGA-sponsored study away programs are required to be enrolled in Zurich international health and travel insurance. For faculty-led and Residential Center programs conducted in groups, OGE will enroll all program participants into USG/UGA Zurich coverage. Students traveling on all other programs are required to self-enroll into the policy. Enrollment instructions are available to students as a part of their travel registration with OGE.
The USG/UGA Zurich policy offers the following trip cancellation benefit (up to $5,000 max) that starts as soon as you are enrolled into the insurance, and is available prior to the program’s official departure date:
We will reimburse the Insured a Pre-Departure Trip Cancellation Benefit, if the Insured is prevented from taking his/her Covered Trip due to the Insured's, or the Insured's Family Member’s Sickness, Covered Injury, or death; for the amount of Payments and Deposits that the Insured paid for his/her Covered Trip (reimbursement of Payments and Deposits is limited to the published cancellation penalties that the Insured was subject to at the time of the cancellation of a Covered Trip); up to the corresponding Maximum Covered Amount shown in the Schedule [$5,000].
We will reimburse the Insured this Pre-Departure Trip Cancellation Benefit, only if the death occurs before departure of the lnsured's Covered Trip.
Optional Supplemental Travel Protection for Academic Travel
UGA recommends that travelers consider purchasing Cancellation & Interruption For Any Reason (CFAR) insurance for international trips. CFAR insurance can help protect your investment in your trip in the event the trip is cancelled before departing or interrupted during a trip for any reason.- CFAR/IFAR insurance will cover: A percentage of your program fees, housing, and flights if your program is canceled or you withdraw from the program for any reason if these expenses are non-refundable.
- CFAR/IFAR insurance will not cover: any program fees, housing, or flights that are refunded through your program, housing, or airline as a result of a trip interruption or cancellation.
USG’s recommended vendor for this insurance is Travel Insured International. Please note that in order to qualify for the Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) benefit, you must purchase the insurance within 14 days of the date that you make your first non-refundable trip payment. For example, if you make your first non-refundable trip payment on July 1st (flight, lodging, excursion, etc.), you will have until July 14th to purchase this coverage and gain access to the CFAR benefit. To enroll, please go to the Travel Insured International website.
