San Luis is probably the safest place I have ever been. I never really felt unsafe, even during excursions to the city or other places.

Summer 2016 Participant
The location provides a safe, comfortable environment surrounding by a caring, welcoming community. No issues with transportation or excursions arose.

Layla Christina Garrett, Summer 2017 Participant
The community and facilities we went to felt very safe, and the people within San Luis were very friendly.

Courses were challenging, but appropriately so. Teachers and students worked together in order to establish realistic due dates and requirements for important assignments. A variety of different activities/projects were utilized to more thoroughly develop the speaking, writing and reading skills of the students.

Kaila Mailin Anderson, Summer 2017 Participant
The professors understood that we were there to learn as well as be immersed in the culture. When we went to homestays, if all of our work wasn't done the next day due to no wifi, the professors were understanding. Though we were in another country, it was still school and it was nothing short of what I expected.

Summer 2016 Participant
All the excursions were amazing, especially Arenal when we went a a hot springs resort. Every field trip was so luxurious and fun, and they gave us our own free time as well to relax or explore

Summer 2016 Participant
The choices for the various excursions in which we participated - from educational field trips to recreational, extracurricular activities - the students had fun, made memories, developed their interpersonal speaking skills, and were able to authentically experience firsthand some of Costa Rica's best aspects.

Summer 2016 Participant
The bungalows of the campus, the homestay residences, and the hotel rooms were all clean, safe, and comfortable for the students.

Lynette Naranjo, Summer 2017 Participant
Everything was very comfortable and I felt safe the entire trip.

Sydney Lauren Hurst, Summer 2016 Participant
The food is one of the best parts of the program!

Lynette Naranjo, Summer 2017 Participant
The food was amazing and never failed to make me happy. It was all organic and very healthy.

Sydney Lauren Hurst, Summer 2016 Participant
The community of San Luis is so welcoming that by the end of the program, you feel like San Luis is home.

Summer 2016 Participant
We had a lot of chances to interact with the community, especially during homestays. We also had a lot of opportunities to help out or just participate in local festivities.

Summer 2016 Participant
There were many, many opportunities to interact with locals and embrace their culture through celebrations, local gatherings, and artistic performances.

Kaila Mailin Anderson, Summer 2017 Participant
Since we stayed at 2 different homestays, we really had the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the culture. We did volunteer services around the city. We also went to Zumba and other neighborhood events. It made me feel really welcomed and like I was actually part of the community.

Layla Christina Garrett, Summer 2017 Participant
The local community and culture was very open to interaction. They did their best to try to make the students feel at home, and to help us immerse within the culture and language that we were trying to learn about. I feel lucky to have met such hospitable people.

LOVE THE COMMUNITY. Large events like dia de San Luis and the school dance were my favorites

Summer 2016 Participant
The staff was friendly, helpful, welcoming, and professional

Lynette Naranjo, Summer 2017 Participant
I loved the staff, they were all very welcoming and always happy.

Kaila Mailin Anderson, Summer 2017 Participant
The staff handled everything in a professional manner and they really took care of us during our stay.

Summer 2016 Participant
Amazing. For what you receive - food, housing, transportation, three courses, access to unique extracurricular excursions, firsthand practice, and an unforgettable experience-, it would not be surprising to have had the trip cost at least double.

Kaila Mailin Anderson, Summer 2017 Participant
I definitely feel like this program was very valuable in relation to the cost. I feel like this was a great use of my money because we did so many things for what seemed like not so much money.

Lynette Naranjo, Summer 2017 Participant
The program exceeded my expectations of what I had in mind!

Matthew Evan Meeks, Summer 2016 Participant
SeƱora Mata did an incredible job with the program and served as a (much needed) mother figure in addition to being a great professor.

Summer 2016 Participant
Everything was great.

Emilia Isabel Suarez, Summer 2016 Participant
I loved the LACS program. I learned a lot and they did a great job of having us integrate into the community.

Summer 2016 Participant
I loved this study abroad so much. The campus and everything was amazing, and the staff and the community were so welcoming and nice. I hope that I can come back soon, preferably as an intern or even a naturalist, because this place had so much impact on me.

Layla Christina Garrett, Summer 2017 Participant
I truly learned a lot of Spanish during my 7 weeks, which is why I decided to join the program in the first place. I also really appreciated the fact that a group flight was suggested, as well as being picked up from the airport once the students arrived in Costa Rica at the beginning of the program (UGA at Oxford needs to do that!)

Ellen Jennifer Mahoney, Summer 2017 Participant
Had a lovely time on this study abroad, I learned a lot and really enjoyed the homestay portion.

Matthew Evan Meeks, Summer 2016 Participant
Future participants should be ready for a good deal of interaction with the local community and being put outside of their comfort zones.
That being said, that interaction will be very rewarding.

Summer 2016 Participant
My advice to future students is to use your Spanish as much as possible and to try to befriend the staff/interns/naturalists because they can teach you a lot.

Summer 2016 Participant
Come with an open-mind and a willingness to learn/experience new things.

Kaila Mailin Anderson, Summer 2017 Participant
Come into this program with an open mind. Costa Rica is different from the United States, but it is a good change.

Ellen Jennifer Mahoney, Summer 2017 Participant
The most important thing is to come into the program with an open mind to have the fullest cultural experience and to truly improve comprehension in Spanish.

Summer 2016 Participant
This study abroad program absolutely prepared me to one day become a fluent Spanish speaker, but it also allowed me to really get to know the community of San Luis and understand their culture.

Sydney Lauren Hurst, Summer 2016 Participant
The opportunity to be a part of the San Luis community is something that I will never forget.

Matthew Evan Meeks, Summer 2016 Participant
Real Spanish exists outside of the classroom. Daily interaction with native speakers is easily the best way to improve you abilities in the language, and the LACS program does an incredible job facilitating these interactions.

Summer 2016 Participant
UGA Costa Rica, specifically the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program, proved to be the summer of a lifetime. We were enriched in a vibrant culture and surrounded by the most genuine community.

Emilia Isabel Suarez, Summer 2016 Participant
UGA Costa Rica is an extraordinarily experience with a special connection to the community of San Luis. I could not recommend any trip higher for students interested in learning Spanish and Latin American culture.

Summer 2016 Participant
The UGA LACS program provided an opportunity for experiential learning in a beautiful foreign environment that will stay with me forever.

Kaila Mailin Anderson, Summer 2017 Participant
This program will be one of the best things you've ever done! You get to meet so many new people! It is cool in the way that you have the opportunity to stay in homestays and really immerse yourself. You become part of the community and feel like you belong. I advise anyone to go on this program because it was a life-changer.

Summer 2017 Participant
I'm glad that I was finally able to study abroad. If it hadn't been for this program, I wouldn't have experience so many of the incredible things that Costa Rica has to offer.

Layla Christina Garrett, Summer 2017 Participant
UGA Costa Rica surpassed my expectations. My confidence and ability to speak Spanish has greatly improved. Being immersed in the culture has taught me more than I would have ever learned inside of a classroom!

Ellen Jennifer Mahoney, Summer 2017 Participant
This program is an amazing way to delve into the Spanish language and the impact of experiencing a homestay is priceless.

Lynette Naranjo, Summer 2017 Participant
My experience in Costa Rica was beyond anything I could've ever imagined. I learned so much about the culture, the lifestyle, and the environment. The relationships I made hold a special place in my heart and the memories I made I will cherish forever. Additionally, the knowledge I gained in Costa Rica was so inspiring, I do my best to apply it into my life now in America. If you want to live an experience that is as life changing as it was for me, please apply to UGA Costa Rica. You won't regret it.

The amazing community in San Luis and the stunning landscapes of the region make any trip to UGA's Costa Rica something I would definitely recommend over and over.
