The orientations provided gave me a great understanding of what I was getting myself into regarding travel and the programs focus.

Shannon Emily Sneade, Summer 2017 Participant
I felt prepared for the entire trip thanks to the orientation materials put together for the program. It gave me realistic expectations without ruining the serendipitous nature of the trip itself.

Our health was always a priority and was monitored by Pete and Tara alike. Anytime students had ailments, Tara was able to fix the, and / or get us the help we needed. Happy to report that even on a challenging surf trip, I did not need the insurance that was provided to me.

I did not feel unsafe once on this program. Pete and Tara are seasoned veterans in Costa Rica and helped to qualm any of the group's worries. Pedro taught us how to care for ourselves in the water, giving me a confidence that not even living by the ocean for 4 years had. Costa Rica is full of tourism, but the spots we went to specifically were well-maintained by caring locals. The excursions-- zip lining, camping, and more-- were so thrilling that I felt no desire to seek out more, and it was Incredible to be able to experience them with our whole crew.

some of the best, most beautiful places you'll see in your life.

Shannon Emily Sneade, Summer 2017 Participant
I feel so lucky to have gone to some of the most beautiful places in Costa Rica and some of the best surf spots in the world where the culture of surfing and Eco tourism is being transformed.

We got to eat so much delicious and authentic Costa Rican cuisine!

Shannon Emily Sneade, Summer 2017 Participant
Every meal was full, prepared by another person, and kept us fueled. I think that sometimes the food didn't need to be as nice, but that is a good problem to have.

Evan Christine Alden, Summer 2017 Participant
We got to learn from someone in the community every single day!

Alessandra Casey, Summer 2017 Participant
We had so many opportunities to ethnographize! It was amazing.

Shannon Emily Sneade, Summer 2017 Participant
Ethnographizing really allowed me to understand the culture and be inspired by the people who lived there.

Kevin Matthew Mataxas, Summer 2016 Participant
Pete and Tara are the absolute best. They were always on top of things, everything was impeccably organized, and each activity enhanced our learning.

They were there for us constantly in any way we needed them to be. There was never any doubt in my mind,

This program was excellent and I would recommend it to anyone interested in Surf Culture and/or conservation and development in developing nations. Dr. Brosious is a wealth of knowledge and the course assistant Tara Ruttenberg was an amazing guide along our journey.

I had the best time in Costa Rica. The people, the cultures, the experiences. I learned far more than I could have every expected to.

Kevin Matthew Mataxas, Summer 2016 Participant
"The surfing and sustainability program was eye-opening; it exposed me to the true impact that our consumerist habits have on the environment and forced me to consider the role I play in global sustainability.

Two quotations, one from Steven, a Costa Rican tico (local), from Nosara, who said to remind tourists: "How simply we live and how happy we are."
The other, from Jaime Peligro, a gringo (foreign) resident of Tamarindo, who said: "People here are eco-minded."

Evan Christine Alden, Summer 2017 Participant
Each day was full of the authentic Costa Rican learning experience - the surf tourism, interacting with and learning from the community, and the wonderful food!

Alessandra Casey, Summer 2017 Participant
This program exceeded my expectations. Every day was such an amazing experience that coming home and trying to articulate the magic that is Costa Rica is almost impossible to do.
