Program Evaluation
Ashley Brooke Adams, Summer 2017 Participant
I found the Ghana culture book I read before entering Ghana extremely helpful and gave me an insight to why people did certain things. This was useful to me because I knew what was considered rude for me to do or not do so I did not offend anyone and made friends easily.

Olivia Nicole Ellgass, Summer 2017 Participant
The pre-departure materials were accurate, however, there truly aren't any materials that fully prepare you for what you are getting into. That being said, I am very thankful for this because looking back on my experience I am so glad that I didn't go into this trip knowing everything there was to know about Ghana or the trip in general because so many of your experiences and the things that you learn there are what really shape your understanding of the place. I was adequately prepared before going so that I felt safe even out of my comfort zone.

Olivia Nicole Ellgass, Summer 2017 Participant
Honestly accessibility and quality of health care can vary pretty greatly depending on what region of Ghana you're in since there are very urban, industrialized cities and there are also very rural areas that don't have access to much, but we definitely would have been able to find proper care if it was needed.

Madeleine Isabel Williams, Summer 2018 Participant
The health care system was comparable to that of the United States, yet in other ways it was very different. I was amazing to see the ingenuity of doctors and nurses when the resources were lacking.

Summer 2016 Participant
Felt totally comfortable the whole time

Kendall Rose Taylor, Summer 2016 Participant
I loved all the excursions we did, and I also felt safe. I loved how we did most of the excursions the first week because it was a good way to adjust before we got to work.

Summer 2016 Participant
I never felt like I was in danger. Traveling in the day light should always be a priority if it can be helped though.

Summer 2016 Participant
I never once felt unsafe while abroad. Our professor was with us the majority of the time or w were in the capable hands of family members and friends of his. We traveled using consistent drivers who I trusted with my life, and they truly cared about our safety. The means of transportation were reliable and safe though the infrastructure was not. The home in which we stayed was gated and comfortable- we were given boundaries and felt extremely comfortable in the welcoming community that was just up the hill. Overall, I can confidently say I never once questioned my safety while abroad because I was surrounded by people that would offer protection and places that were not unsafe in the slightest.

Ashley Brooke Adams, Summer 2017 Participant
I felt very safe the entire stay in Ghana.

Olivia Nicole Ellgass, Summer 2017 Participant
I never once felt uncomfortable or unsafe while in Ghana, whether we were out and about traveling or in our homestay community. I was able to see and experience a lot all while being in a completely different environment without feeling like I was in harm's way.

Summer 2017 Participant
We were very safe throughout the entire trip. We traveled all around the country and there was not a time where I felt I was in any danger. Ghana is a relatively safe country.

Summer 2018 Participant
I always felt safe where ever we were. If there was anyplace we needed to be more carful at, we were told. The professor made sure we were never put a bad situation.

Summer 2018 Participant
Our drivers were excellent and the transportation was efficient.

Madeleine Isabel Williams, Summer 2018 Participant
I never felt unsafe. It was amazing that we could go anywhere in Ghana and feel as though we were locals.

Lindsey Marie Woller, Summer 2018 Participant
I never felt unsafe the entire program.

Summer 2016 Participant
Good balance of service learning but still having discussions and reflections on what we were learning

Summer 2016 Participant
From facilitated discussion to private reflection, I believe that the workload and general academics was up to UGA's standards and provided me with not only new academic knowledge of medical, nutritional, and patient care techniques, but also with new knowledge of myself in a personal and professional settings.

Rachel Marie Cleypool, Summer 2017 Participant
The school work all related to exactly what we were there on the service learning abroad experience for. I was very happy with how we got to gather our own thoughts on the experience.

Olivia Nicole Ellgass, Summer 2017 Participant
I have never learned so much in such a short period of time in a more enjoyable manor. I am the biggest proponent of hands-on learning, especially after this trip. I was able to learn by doing and getting in on the action, and I know this knowledge will stick with me for a lifetime. I learned from listening to experiences of my peers in combination with feedback and expertise from my professor who could speak into things through knowing the culture and the country better than anyone. I was never once bored with a discussion that we were having and I feel much more well-rounded after learning so many different aspects about a culture other than my own.

Summer 2017 Participant
I thought the amount of work was perfect for the trip and I truly feel like I learned more about the country and myself. I felt the book discussions were enlightening and enjoyed discussing social/health topics with those of a different mindset/opinion.

Summer 2017 Participant
We had several paper which challenged me to become a better writer.

Summer 2017 Participant
The assignments were fair and reasonable, and they were assigned at times where it was possible to complete them in their entirety. The assignments also helped you keep track of all the activities and events that occurred throughout the trip and gave you a chance to reflect on them.

Chastity Cheyenne Grooms, Summer 2018 Participant
I learned a lot and the reflective writing was helpful in analyzing my overall experience but the workload was a bit much considering the times we had to be awake and the hours that we worked all day. I think that the daily journals are necessary and the blogs are great but putting a few more days between the essays would be helpful.

Madeleine Isabel Williams, Summer 2018 Participant
The work load was the perfect amount since we were traveling most days. We had down time in the afternoons so finishing the work was very doable. The work load consisted of papers, two exams, and writing journals.

Lindsey Marie Woller, Summer 2018 Participant
Was constantly busy with work, but never overwhelmed.

Summer 2016 Participant
I loved getting to visit all of the regions except for the topmost northern ones. I highly recommend visiting Volta!

Summer 2016 Participant
Perfection. We had a nice balance of historical and academic sites with nature exploration/enjoyment opportunities. Because we visited places on both sides of the spectrum, I felt that the trip was well balanced and allowed for adequate relaxation along with the chance to learn new information.I also got to see some pretty awesome wild animals and sites throughout the ENTIRE country of Ghana.

Rachel Marie Cleypool, Summer 2017 Participant
Our group got to visit multiple towns and villages where we would have never thought to go on our own. The excursion experiences the first week there and the following few weekends really helped me to explore the country more.

Olivia Nicole Ellgass, Summer 2017 Participant
This trip allows you to incorporate the perfect amount of sightseeing and tourist activities, all while learning and traveling the country. I got to travel and see a majority of the country and different regions in one short month through excursions and community work, which I was very thankful for. The only thing that I can think of that would have made the places we went even better would be to have gotten to go to Takoradi to see and experience where Dr. Anderson grew up, even though the program only goes every other year.

Summer 2017 Participant
The choices for our field trips were nice. Cape Coast, Volta, The Monkey Sanctuary, The Mole National Park were just a few of the places we got to visit. We saw nice beaches, slave castles, climbed a mountain, saw a beautiful waterfall and much more at all these sites. We got to experience the beauty that this country had to showcase.

Chandler Marie Winstead, Summer 2017 Participant
Phenomenal excursions out in Ghana. I couldn't have asked for more.

Allison Mae Griner, Summer 2018 Participant
Loved all of the places and experiences that we went to and had.

Summer 2018 Participant
The locations were enriching and immersive. I felt like I had a great overview of the country.

Madeleine Isabel Williams, Summer 2018 Participant
We had the amazing opportunity to see so many villages and cities, so we got the full experience of the city vibe, as well as the smaller city vibe.

Summer 2016 Participant
Ms. Margaret became our adoptive mother throughout the trip. She made sure that we were safe, happy and well cared for ever day of the week. She did all of our laundry, cooked all of our meals, and cleaned up the messes we made. I really do not know how this trip would have transpired without her and her willingness to house us at the family home. I am so thankful for the support she provided and the roof she put over our head.

Ashley Brooke Adams, Summer 2017 Participant
Housing was so nice!!

Rachel Marie Cleypool, Summer 2017 Participant
We had very nice living conditions that were well thought through.

Olivia Nicole Ellgass, Summer 2017 Participant
I went into this trip being prepared for the worst living arrangements I could think of due to not knowing what to expect and wow was I shocked when we first arrived. The home that we stayed in is beautiful and we were treated like family during our entire stay. My expectations were far exceeded and I would go back in a heartbeat if I could.

Summer 2017 Participant
The place that we stayed in was very clean and tidy. I was never concerned about the cleanliness and it also felt very safe.

Chandler Marie Winstead, Summer 2017 Participant
The house was amazing and very accommodating to 12 girls.

Summer 2016 Participant
While we were not provided lunch at anytime on the trip, we were well taken care of for breakfast and dinner. I would leave every meal satisfied whether from Ms. Margaret kitchen or from a restaurant around the country, As long as I stayed away from food sold on the street from unreliable vendors, every meal was golden.

Olivia Nicole Ellgass, Summer 2017 Participant
Not only was delicious food prepared and laid out for us at (even at crazy early hours), but our opinions and preferences were taken into account which made meal time that much more enjoyable. If we liked a dish then it would be made more often, if we didn't like it then not so much. If we were missing fruit a lot we would stop and get some from the stand on our way home which was awesome. The only downside to eating arrangements that I would say are lunches due to being out and about either at community or hospital work during most afternoons which makes eating lunch difficult and snacks get old pretty quickly, but it would be hard to work around our busy working hours and do lunch any other way so it makes sense. Being a nutritional sciences major there were times that I hoped for healthier food options but that also comes with the culture and experiencing the same types of food that are custom to the place.

Summer 2017 Participant
The quality of the meals was great. They were nice and nutritious. Only breakfast and dinner is served, so snacks have to be eaten instead for lunch. This is not a real issue, but since breakfast is served very early (around 6 am) and dinner is served later (around 7 pm), you will be very hungry in-between if you do not pack appropriate and filling snacks to eat.

Summer 2016 Participant
You were always surrounded by opportunities to interact and learn about local culture. It was impossible not to.

Summer 2016 Participant
It was up to us to seek interaction with the culture and people of the area, and while we may not have taken advantage of those opportunities, they were available. Through the program, we were able to interact with many as they attended our clinics, and I learned so much in those moments. As we began to branch out more towards the end of the trip, we became more comfortable in our setting and learned even more about their culture and felt more accepted in the community.

Rachel Marie Cleypool, Summer 2017 Participant
This was perfect. We got the chance to interact one on one with the people in each place we traveled. I have learned an extreme amount from these sweet, life-loving Ghanaians.

Olivia Nicole Ellgass, Summer 2017 Participant
You are submerged into the culture and get to interact with some of the nicest people I have ever met, people who are genuinely so thankful for the services that you are providing and who appreciate you. I was able to pick up a decent amount of Twi while I was there simply by interacting with the local culture and also learned what it looked like to be in a culture other than what I was used to. It will give you a greater appreciation for what you have and what you take for granted and I'm so thankful for that realization.

Summer 2017 Participant
Everyday was an opportunity to interact with the local culture. We were talking to people everyday.

Summer 2017 Participant
We were pretty much free to interact with the locals and ask them many questions. We had the opportunity to go out as a group together to the mall or to the market and experience Ghanaian culture. Our professor gave us tips on how to bargain while at the market and we tried putting those tips to practice. We even got to see a play.

Madeleine Isabel Williams, Summer 2018 Participant
The people here are so special. They welcome you and make you apart of their family so fast! It felt like home because of the people in Ghana.

Summer 2016 Participant
Dr. Anderson is incredible. I honestly do not know how he maintained the energy to facilitate, teach, and protect twelve girls for a month.

Summer 2016 Participant
Dr. Anderson was so amazing and supportive of everyone on this trip. Not only did he keep us all in line, he pushed us to try new things and have new experiences. And he planned everything so that we were in the safest environment possible with ultimate comfort and knowledge to be gained.

Rachel Marie Cleypool, Summer 2017 Participant
Dr. Anderson is good at knowing what he is doing with us since it has been around 10 years that he has gone on this program. It is aggravating when he chooses not to inform us about important things though, such as being sure to leave our valuables behind and only take minimal things to the hospitals when we thought we could lock them away.

Olivia Nicole Ellgass, Summer 2017 Participant
Dr. Anderson knows this country and this program like the back of his hand. He did an excellent job of coordinating meetings to get us caught up before we even left, giving us enough structure while we were there while still giving us plenty of room to grow and learn on our own, and had a program plan that allowed us to experience as much of the country and culture that we possible could while we were there.

Summer 2017 Participant
The program was planned very well. Everything that we were going to do was laid out for us ahead of time, and a nice, neat schedule was given to us. Our professor did a very good job organizing the trip and making sure we arrived at all our destinations on time. He did a good job picking out interesting sites in Ghana, and places that were affordable for us to eat, sleep, and tour.

Summer 2016 Participant
Dr. Anderson is amazing. He maintained the perfect balance of being a teacher and a caretaker.

Summer 2016 Participant
Dr. Anderson took full responsibility for us while abroad and made sure that we were comfortable around him so that we could voice our grievances and questions and he would address them in an efficient acceptable way.

Olivia Nicole Ellgass, Summer 2017 Participant
I loved how most of the learning came from getting together each night and talking about our individual experiences that we each had during that day. Book discussions were also very helpful for bringing up new perspectives and were the perfect avenue for learning about some of the aspects about the culture that we didn't come in contact with or weren't obvious in our daily experiences.

Summer 2017 Participant
The program also handled this very well. There weren't too many times where any of us had any academic and personal needs and concerns, but when I was having trouble with my laptop, my professor kindly offered his so I would be able to turn in my assignments on time and not be penalized.

Madeleine Isabel Williams, Summer 2018 Participant
Dr. Anderson did a fairly good job at being open to talk about grades and questions you had relating to those topics. If you brought a valid point to argue with him he would accept that he was wrong.

Ashley Brooke Adams, Summer 2017 Participant
This program is invaluable I learned so much and got so much real life experience.

Olivia Nicole Ellgass, Summer 2017 Participant
It's hard to put a price tag on a priceless experience like this, but if I had to then I would say that it was definitely worth every penny. If one could have seen the grin under my surgical mask while I helped deliver a baby by cesarean section or heard me saying "this is the greatest moment of my entire life!", then that might help someone comprehend just how valuable this trip was to me. And on top of that, I am extremely grateful to have received two generous scholarships that helped make this experience possible, regardless of the cost.

Summer 2017 Participant
The cost was definitely worth it. There was just so much we got to experience in our month in Ghana. We got to travel all over the country. We went to many places to volunteer and set up our health clinic. We got to go shadow in the two main hospitals in Accra. We got to travel to the different tourist areas (Cape Coast, Volta, Mole, etc.) and got to explore the market in Kumasi and Accra. There was just so many things we got to do. There were so many memories we got to create. The trip was very worthwhile, and the cost was definitely reasonable.

Olivia Nicole Ellgass, Summer 2017 Participant
This trip was everything that I imagined and more: the experiences that I had, the friendships that were made, the knowledge that I came out with, and the list goes on and on. I couldn't have asked for a professor more fit to lead the trip and lead the learning that took place or for a better experience in general. This trip has shaped and molded me and I know it will continue to impact me for the rest of my life, throughout my career and in my personal life as well.

Summer 2017 Participant
This trip exceeded my expectations. I was worried about the accommodations and conditions of the country but it turned out to be better than I expected. Additionally, I feel like I finally got the chance to apply what I've learned in class to a real patient setting. I also developed critical thinking skills through book discussions, reflective writing opportunities, and shadowing experiences.

Anna Eleanor Murphy, Summer 2017 Participant
This trip exceed my exceptions completely. The activities we were able to do changed my life and I never could have imagined I would have learned so much in such a short time. Dr. Anderson put an amazing group together which also really added to the experience. Everyone that was there was caring, hardworking, and excited about immersing themselves in the culture.

Summer 2017 Participant
This program exceeded my expectations and set the bar extremely high for future study abroad trips.

Summer 2017 Participant
This program was truly incredible. Everything was very organized and the benefits from this trip were out of this world! I loved how we got to see so many different parts of Ghana and had a good amount of time to go explore the country outside of just doing school work.

Summer 2017 Participant
This program definitely exceeded my expectations. I got to see and experience things that otherwise would never have happened unless I had gone on this trip. You really get to experience so much of Ghana's culture while you are there. You will be immersed in it. You will get to interact with so many Ghanaians. You will eat their food. You will shop in the markets.

Chastity Cheyenne Grooms, Summer 2018 Participant
This program blew my expectations out the water and I didn't really even have any expectations. I learned more in a four week period than I have during a year of classes. Ghana now holds a special place in my heart and I hope to return in the future to further my education or career pursuits or even just to visit again!

Madeleine Isabel Williams, Summer 2018 Participant
I had an amazing time on this program. It was done really well with only a few disappointments. I wouldn't change anything, I loved it.

Summer 2016 Participant
This was such a valuable program that I'm so thankful is offered at UGA. It is unlike any other study abroad option I have ever encountered and everything I learned and experienced was so valuable, it was the opportunity of a lifetime.

Summer 2016 Participant
This program was a hectic, once-in-a-lifetime experience and I am so glad to have been a part of it.

Summer 2017 Participant
I wish I could do this program every year. I had the chance to just focus on healthcare, tourism, meeting new people, and overcoming fears.

Summer 2017 Participant
Ghana is a beautiful country and the people are very friendly and kind. While it felt so nice to be back home, I do have plans to go back and visit one day.

Chandler Marie Winstead, Summer 2017 Participant
Trip is incredible. I would go back in a heart beat.

Chastity Cheyenne Grooms, Summer 2018 Participant
Dr. Anderson was fantastic! He really made it a point to make sure that we learned and experienced the Ghanaian culture.

Summer 2018 Participant
This program was amazing, I only wish we had more free time to explore the culture and talk to more people. Any free time we had, I usually spent it working on our assignments. All considering this was an absolutely amazing opportunity to be apart of

Summer 2016 Participant
Advise for future participants- Be prepared to be uncomfortable sometimes, but lean into the discomfort and learn from it because it will help you grow and enhance your experience more than you could ever imagine. Growth comes from being outside of your comfort zone.

Summer 2016 Participant
Consider donating most of what you bring for the trip. This is what I did, and I only had to fly back with my backpack and a duffle bag. You're doing a great thing, and it's more convenient for you too!

Summer 2016 Participant
I think that students who come on this trip should be prepared for and expectant of more than just medical experience.

Summer 2016 Participant
Take advantage of every opportunity you have to emerge yourself in the community while abroad. The people of Ghana are so kind and have so much wisdom that needs to be shared. Truly get comfortable with the uncomfortable to enjoy this experience as much as possible.

Olivia Nicole Ellgass, Summer 2017 Participant
One recommendation that I can think of would be to include the cost of a modem for internet access in the program fee so that way it isn't coming out of spending money since it is necessary for turning in assignments and such anyways. Advice for future participants would be: bring a WIDE variety of snacks with you for lunches because even the variety you think you're bringing will still get old after eating it so much, be easy-going and accommodating with the people that you're staying with because they can become some of your closest friends if you go into it with the right attitude and mindset, and to have fun and put yourself out there because you never know what you may get to experience just by asking.

Summer 2017 Participant
Travel smart. Stick to the buddy system, pack light but efficiently (a sleep sack was a great investment), take care of your health (that includes medication and personal well-being), and bring a variety of snacks.

Summer 2017 Participant
Keep an open mind. The culture shock will be huge, but remember that everyone else on your trip is experiencing the same thing. You will get to experience a lot and see the many different aspects of Ghanaian culture. You'll also stick out a bit, which will cause a lot of people to stare; Ghanaian people are nice, however, so there isn't any animosity in their stares. You'll be forced out of your comfort zone. You should also be patient with yourself if you find that you are not adjusting to the new environment as quickly as everyone else or as quickly you'd expected for yourself.

Chandler Marie Winstead, Summer 2017 Participant
I would warn the people that go on the trip that Verizon does not have an international plan for Ghana and that they need to be prepared to buy a phone while there or bring money to add data to the motem.

Summer 2018 Participant
Future participants should be very aware of the fact that they get the most out of the experience when they are open to learning!

Maya Arlene Underwood, Summer 2018 Participant
Go into the program with an open-mind, open-eyes, and an open-heart.

Madeleine Isabel Williams, Summer 2018 Participant
Do a lot of research before you enter the country, try and experience everything, and learn as much as you can!

Lindsey Marie Woller, Summer 2018 Participant
Have patience and an open mind set with everything you do.

Summer 2016 Participant
My trip to Ghana gave me confidence to pursue medicine but also reminded me that the most important thing is how we love others and appreciate our differences

Summer 2016 Participant
This service-learning program provided me an opportunity of a lifetime to give back to a community that gave me so much in return.

Summer 2016 Participant
This trip offered an amazing opportunity to learn about the culture of Ghana and the field of medicine. I would highly recommend the Ghana Service Learning Program for someone who wants to experience hands-on patient interaction, a wide variety of shadowing options, the spectacular people of Ghana, and a little bit of adventure!

Aniya Karion Hamilton, Summer 2016 Participant
Come to Ghana with an open mind and open heart and it will reveal to you all of its hidden jewels

Summer 2016 Participant
This trip completely changed my world view.

Summer 2016 Participant
"A trip that will change your perspective and allow you to grow and learn so much about yourself in just four short weeks."

Summer 2016 Participant
This trip was an exciting introduction to the people, animals, and landscape of Ghana that offered medical opportunities that you won't find in the United States.

Kendall Rose Taylor, Summer 2016 Participant
If you want to study abroad to simply have fun, this is not the trip for you. This trip is about being challenged, learning the nobility of serving, discovering yourself, recognizing your true passions, and creating memories that will impact your life forever. You will embark on this trip with intentions of helping others, but you will walk away from this experience realizing that you had the most to gain.

Summer 2016 Participant
This program was incredible. I do not think this trip is for everyone. You have to be fairly easy going and fully prepared and excited to jump into a completely different world where nothing is familiar and you are the minority. Those aspects are what makes this trip so unique and worthwhile. This trip is a chance you will never have on your own because we have the chance to travel Ghana with Dr. Anderson, a local who has tons of friends and family that want to host and meet us. This trip is a chance to learn and experience a part of the world not many people have hd the opportunity to see.

Summer 2016 Participant
Going abroad was one of the best experiences of my life. I gained invaluable knowledge and made memories all while gaining a newfound appreciation for the availability of common luxuries and lifestyles in America.

Ashley Brooke Adams, Summer 2017 Participant
This program is invaluable I learned so much and got so much life experience in both healthcare and learning about a culture completely different from my own.

Rachel Marie Cleypool, Summer 2017 Participant
If you are on the pre-medical track, I would highly suggest this program. The quality of exposure to third world medical issues and hands-on experiences is genuine and informative. It will be a month long service learning experience you will be telling friends and family about for years and years!

Olivia Nicole Ellgass, Summer 2017 Participant
This trip was hands down the greatest experience of my life. I learned more than I thought was possible, not only about Ghana as a whole but so much about myself as well. I learned that willpower, hard work, and adaptability go a long way in life and that you will never regret putting in your best effort or going the extra mile. To put it simply, this trip has left me thankful - thankful for this opportunity, the people that I got to share it with, new experiences and understanding, and a renewed appreciation for life and everything that it has to offer.

Summer 2017 Participant
This program pushed me farther out of my comfort zone than anything I have ever experienced. It challenged me not only to understand a completely different culture, but to analyze my background, beliefs, and career goals as well. The community service we performed and the shadowing experiences we had is a great way for any student considering a health profession to explore the medical field.

Anna Eleanor Murphy, Summer 2017 Participant
My trip to Ghana was truly a one in a lifetime opportunity that taught me more in four short weeks than I could have learned in years in a classroom.

Summer 2017 Participant
"Going to Ghana is a life changing experience"; "One of the most immersive trips I have been on"; "Do this program and you won't regret it"; "If you are thinking of doing any health-related career, apply for this trip"; "Ghana be a good time"

Summer 2017 Participant
This program has been one of the best decisions of my life

Chandler Marie Winstead, Summer 2017 Participant
"Ghana can change your life from the inside out. The people are inspirational and the experiences are like nothing you could ever imagine. I am walking from this trip knowing what I want to do with my life."

Allison Mae Griner, Summer 2018 Participant
The Ghana Service Learning trip gave me the confidence I need to pursue my career in the healthcare field, allowed me to connect with so many people, and learn about a culture so different than my own!

I grew in my teamwork capabilities, leadership skills, and global views.

Erin Lindsey Harman, Summer 2018 Participant
"The Ghana Service Learning Program revealed my love for travel and passion for people. I loved the way that I was able to connect with Ghanaians through our mobile clinics and the realization that we are far more capable of changing the world than we think"

Summer 2018 Participant
this was the best way I could have spent my summer!

Summer 2018 Participant
"In a country that's illustrated to be so different from my own, I actually found a home."

Alexis Adaure Nosiri, Summer 2018 Participant
I met some of the most inspirational and intelligent health professionals in Ghana. This experience has helped me further shape my goals for my future dietetic career.

Lindsey Marie Woller, Summer 2018 Participant
A life changing experience that will provide you with a new lens in the health care field.
