German healthcare is amazing. No worrying if a certain service is covered, no huge deductibles or copays. It can take a few days to see a doctor, but compared to the US system, it's the best thing ever.

I felt safer in Heidelberg than I did in Athens, because young adults in Europe actually know how to deal with alcohol and there isn't a big football or party culture.

Students in Germany spend less time in actual class and more time working outside of class, so it's definitely different from UGA, but it's manageable if you're careful and pay attention..

Heidelberg is well situated for travel to southern France, northern Italy, and Austria. There's also a lot of things to see in Heidelberg itself. It's a very pretty town.

Heidelberg is close to Frankfurt and Stuttgart so it is easy to take flights around Europe.

Room was a good size, and the kitchen was well outfitted. Kitchen was a little dirty and needed cleaning. Clothes washing facilities were only a three minute walk away. Washers and dryers were a little expensive. Housing very secure, electronic card readers at the front door of the building, the door of each of apartment, and the door each individual room.

University of Heidelberg offers no meal plans, but I had a kitchen with a stove, oven, and microwave. Eating in the dining is greatly discounted for students ($0.80 per 100 grams) and the food is good.

The dining halls in Heidelberg is great and have many options at a low price. Less than 3$ for a full plate

Heidelberg has an old castle and prison that can be toured. Many reasonably priced excursions to surrounding areas were offered both by the university and exchange student organizations such as AEGEE.

Which the scholarships provided by both UGA and the German state of Baden-Württemberg, I only ended up spending about $3000 of my own money during the entire year. And it's definitely possible to do it for cheaper. For example, I travelled a lot, so that ended up being quite a bit of money.

If you're a language or linguistics major, it's more than worth it to study in a country where your language is spoken, especially if you're not a native speaker. You won't regret it.

Being in Heidelberg surrounded by german students and living 5 minutes away from a castle is something I still cannot believe I had a chance to do and I am incredibly grateful.
